On The Quest To "Cure" Boredom... in Vancouver, BC

I've learned that...

once kids discover something that they truly enjoy

like

reading
playing

shopping or swimming

it is almost impossible to get them to focus on much anything else

and

I've also learned that...

unless you have plans to

pack bags
get on a plane

and

cross borders

to introduce them to "new" bodies of water...

getting them out of the pool will not be easy

But imagine my surprise when we traveled to Canada for our annual family vacation
and the first thing that the kids wanted to do was...

(you already know)

hit the pool!

And although the weather was significantly cooler
than our warmer Southern CA temps, do you think they even cared one tiny bit?

Nope.  They wanted swimming.

morning
night
noon

But of course we had other plans...

because you don't spend $$$$ on

passports
parking

and

plane tickets

to stay in the hotel pool all day

No, you don't

You go to experience...

Victoria Island
The Butchart Gardens
Whistler
Granville Island
Stanley Park
Gastown

and

the Capilano Suspension Bridge

because when you're blessed to have the opportunity to travel with

three generations
church family
friends

those things are "necessary"

But after all of that
(perhaps what was most eye-opening)

was that at the end of the day my kids still just wanted swimming

So here's to...

family
fun
childhood
vacation

because what my children have ultimately shown me during our recent family vacation is that

when you're done graciously doing

seeing
experiencing

"the necessary"

you should always

always
always

morning
night
noon

find time to

GO BACK...
to do what you really love!

Thirty-Nine Candles

There were ten...

healed
cleansed
touched

but only one
came back to thank Him

So when I saw the writing prompt for this week's Five Minute Friday

I knew that I was that one

as I've just spent the past five days enjoying

faith
family
friends

and celebrating another year of life

And although there were ten...

I am one

and

I am blessed
I am here
I am back

just to say...

"Thank You"

I Am Free

It's Five Minute Friday and so when I saw today's word... FREE

I immediately smiled
because I had just been thinking about that one word and my journey towards it

Quick recap...

At the beginning of 2015
I chose One Word to focus on for the year and it was...

FREE

Then just about a month or so ago
I wrote about being...

HAIR FREE

and then just this past Tuesday when our Family Feud episode re-aired,
I realized that I was finally over it!

I am FREE!

(you can read the full story here )

because being free is not just a physical condition
it is a state of mind

and as far as the other...

regrets
failures
faded dreams

and

unrealized plans

are concerned...

you know what?

I am free
I am right where God wants me to be

and when He's ready...

He'll do
He'll move
He'll provide

while I simply stand with Him

COMPLETELY FREE!
(And I went a little over the five minutes... so guess I'm free from that too)

Here's a little song that we sing at our church...

I Am Free
Praise the Lord I'm Free
No longer bound
No more chains holding me
My soul is resting
It's such a blessing
Praise the Lord
Hallelujah, I'm FREE!

On The Quest To "Cure" Boredom... at The Pool

The children were complaining of boredom so they...

read some stories
wrote their own

and when they were done with it

put down their pens
closed their books

and went outside

to enjoy some summer fun at the pool

the little cousins also came over for a dip

... and now they certainly do not look "bored" to me!

Check out how the kids "cured" boredom during our family vacation...

Thirteen Candles

First there was only one candle...

Then three...

Then one and three...

Yep, this is what 13 candles on a cupcake looks like!

and for the life of me I cannot seem to

figure out
fathom
forget

how we got here
how good He's been
how blessed we are

to get to see...

thirteen candles

Another Day to Hope

He gave us July 10, 2002

a day...

to hope
to dream
to love

and celebrate as you were born

healthy
happy
whole

pulling all of our hopes, dreams, and love into realization

It has been thirteen years now and I could have never imagined
it was possible to love you more than I did

on that day
in that moment

but here we are...

He gave us July 10, 2015

another year
another memory

another day...

to hope
to dream
to love

and to celebrate you!!

Happy 13th Birthday Son!

sharing this today...

On The Quest To "Cure" Boredom... Just Go Outside

Some days we only had...

one bicycle
a pair of skates and
a JC Penny catalog

but we figured out how to make it work

because it was summertime
we were together
and there was no such thing as being "bored"

With one bicycle we could...

take turns

giving each other rides on the handlebars
pulling the other one wearing the pair of skates

or

chasing stray cats back down the alley

With a pair of skates we could...

share them

each wearing one while sporting a tennis shoe on the other foot to

run
run
run

glide

Or we could always...

play jacks
jump rope
hopscotch
eat Captain Crunch
read magazines
act out scenes from our favorite movies
make up our own
chase down the ice cream truck
run through the sprinklers
wash the car
sing
dance
do cheers
make up drill team routines
look through each other's yearbook
talk about boys

and people watch

Then after all of that...

when we got

hot
hungry
tired

we could retreat

into my grandmother's house to eat fresh meatloaf sandwiches
into her mother's kitchen for bowls of chicken rice-a-roni
then back to my grandmother's for vanilla ice cream and butter cookies

Until finally...

plopping down into her father's rocking chair
opening her mother's JC Penny catalog across our laps
and playing "I got that"

But kids today don't know nothing about that

they'd rather

tweet
text
talk to "friends" on social media

instead of enjoying the people that are actually in the same

neighborhood
house
room

with them

They'd rather

lay around
look around
complain of boredom

when all they need to do is get up and...

just go outside!

My Favorite Pain

The things that I see everyday

the people I meet
the stories I hear

often cause my heart

to break
and bleed

as I wonder what the future will hold for you

So I pray...

every time

I hear of

crime
hate
violence

when I see someone

cry
scream
protest

I pray...

because I remember

the pain
the agony
the anguish

of bringing you into this world

and the immediate joy thereafter...

I never realized that loving someone could hurt so much

but,

"for the joy that was set before Him, He endured the cross"
and because He loves us so

we became His favorite pain

and when I get home

you are there

watching
waiting
wondering...

"Mom, what's for dinner?"

before I've even had five minutes to sit and put my bags down

tired
restless
weary

I walk to the sink
wash my hands and
begin preparing our meal

because being your

mother
momma
mom

is by far...

my favorite pain
