How To Use What You Have This Mother's Day

We've recently discovered
some ways to use clearance items to celebrate

Valentine's Day
St. Patrick's Day and Easter

and with Mother's Day quickly approaching
I needed to remind my family not to buy me anything again this year

because I really do have enough stuff

(click here to read last year's post
"What Your Mom really wants for Mother's Day)

Instead I am sincerely

grateful
thankful
happy

to share the simple ways we've learned to just
"use what we have"

Handmade Art

like the masterpieces the children create during our studio time

A Small Surprise

prepay for a service that she uses regularly
put a little cash in her wallet along with a note

or you can even surprise mom
by leaving a few pictures on her phone or camera

(Imagine my delight the day that I found these photos of my daughter)

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

and I was so proud of my daughter who "used what she had" to make these special treats

Items used

5 leftover "school fundraiser chocolate" bars
1 small basket of strawberries

Total spent... only 99cents!

And the first batch were so delicious that I asked her to make more to share with
the other mothers in "our village" because I have also learned that it takes many mothers

Happy Savings and Happy Mother's Day!

"APFLH" Children's Art Studio- "The Art Within"

It's that time of year again!

So the kids and I...

opened up our studio space
pulled out some art supplies

and spent a lovely afternoon

creating
celebrating
capturing

the artistic expressions within!

inspired by the story...

by Jeron Ashford Frame

 "Be Yourself"- Bubble Print Art

Construction Paper

inspired by David McKee's...

"Elmer"

 and

"Llama Llama Mad at Mama"

inspired each of my children to express their feelings
in their own unique way

my daughter chose to paint a "cheerleader" figurine

and my son brought out the mini Legos and designed to his heart's content

proving that time in our art studio always leaves us all feeling young again!

Two Years in The Same Black Dress

I've literally spent two years in the same black dress

and I'm not even sure when I'll be done with it...
or if I'll ever be done

because I have no desire to retire this dress anytime soon

It's simple
It's comfortable
It's wash and wear

and this same black dress has become a staple wardrobe piece
that I've found can be worn with...

and even to support

It also works well with...

pastels
brights
neutrals

or...

patterns
prints
polka dots

it works well...

pulled up as a shirt

or even...

pulled down as a maxi skirt

and what's best is this black dress can be worn just about everywhere...
school
work
church
concerts/musicals
horseback riding
family game night
dinner
movies

you name it...

So here's to two years in the same black dress!

Why I'm Glad That I Work in The 'Hood

It felt...

as if He was preparing me for something new

so I

fasted
prayed
asked for direction

and that same day received a telephone call

with

an invitation
an invocation

to come
back home

to serve

It sounded...

too big
too scary
too much

and so I agreed

and when I got there I was surprised to see my old neighborhood
(also affectionately referred to as "The 'Hood")

is right where I ended up
is right where I am to be
is right where I started

and on most days

is what feels right...

But working in the 'hood is not always

easy
pleasant
pleasurable

(or even what I want to do)

and there are days when I

cry out
pray
reconsider

God's direction and desire for my life

And that's when...

I see the beauty of working in the 'hood!
(because I'm almost sure everyone has those kind of days)

But...

when you work in the neighborhood where you grew up

there are

reminders
memories
landmarks

all around

my first home
my first school
my first church

the place my parents met
the High School they attended

the places I learned to

roller skate
ride a bike
read

So on a really hard day...

I can simply

step outside
look around
remember

I was born here
I grew up here
I am back here

and my purpose is right

here...

at least for now

The Difference Between Him and Us... at Easter

He...

"dressed down"
for us

So we could...

"dress up"
for Him

Happy Resurrection Sunday
from our family to yours!
