Exploring Art and Culture w/ Family Movie Night

Exploring "Art and Culture" is amazing
as we learn so much together!

(to start from the beginning)
-------------------------------

Our theater experiences are limited, but there is
absolutely nothing stopping us from enjoying

the films we love with
the people we love

while in

the comfort of our own...

homes
cars
backyards

Gather your loved ones, pull out the blankets, and prepare
for an "in-home" family movie experience everyone can enjoy

COCO

Children cannot sit through an entire movie?

No worries...
 hit the drive-in!

Paramount Drive-in Theatres

Back at home set up an interactive display with
snacks and developmentally appropriate activities

"We may have our differences, but
nothing's more important than family"

(re) introduce...

"Day of the Dead"
a traditional Mexican holiday

as a time to celebrate family

-honor loved ones who have passed
-introduce young children to family history and heritage
-remember those who matter most to us

the underlying message is love, grace
(restoration), and perseverance

-----------------------------

Movie Sleepover

Gather your blankets and pillows
build a fort, and cozy up to watch

Inside Out

as characters

Anger, Fear, Joy, Sadness, Disgust
show how each play an important part
in our growth and development

laugh...
cry...
talk about it...

this movie has so many layers (and is perfect)
for starting a conversation about feelings

"Take her to the moon for me Joy"

(same part gets me every time!)

----------------------------

and finally...

Who says "family movie night"
has to be at night?

Consider...

"Brunch and a Movie"
instead!

w/

The Little Prince

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.
What is essential is invisible to the eye."

-The Little Prince

Take time to play
pay attention
open your eyes

(and see)

exactly who/what
matters most to you

Aloha, Talofa, Ni Hao... Many Ways to Say Hello

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

while also "introducing" the many ways

we can say...

"hello"

"Hello is the first word that connects us"
-------------------------------------------

Books and Music

"The Hungriest Boy in the World"
by Lensey Namioka

provides a lesson and a reminder that
not everything is meant to be consumed

Beautiful photographs, authentic recipes, historical context...
expand your library AND enrich your exploration of Art and Culture

These books were only 25 cents
at my local thrift store!

-----------------------------------------------------

Next...

enjoy the rich tone of the

translated message reads...

"May peace and fortune
come into your home"

Instruments and Art

Using repurposed household items to make
musical instruments is both practical and simple

a maraca, a guitar, and a tambourine

Extend the Experience

Find a festival, visit a local museum
or create your own gallery display...

Exploring Art and Culture (Celebrating Black History)

Black History
is more than just...

to focus on the history
of Blacks in America

it is an
opportunity to start...

real
relevant
long-lasting

conversations

that

educate
stimulate

and challenge minds
to push beyond

the surface level knowledge
of the Black experience

it is an
opportunity to stop...

remember
acknowledge

the ways in which all of
our daily lives are enriched

(as a direct result)

of the many invaluable contributions
made by people of color throughout history

So expand the ways in which you approach honoring
Black History Month, and most of all remember to say...

"Thank you"
----------------------------------------

Children's Books and Activities

Children are ego-centric by nature

(which means)

younger children who may be less
interested in "the history"

may better enjoy a celebration
of Black Culture as it relates

to

who they are
those they love

and

the impact made to their daily
interactions and experiences

"Shades of Black"
by Sandra L. Pinkney

Read children's books that are useful for promoting
positive image of self, and appreciation for diversity

"I am Black. I am Unique."

then...

when children are ready
to transition the conversation

remember the best way to engage them
is with hands-on, interactive PLAY!
--------------------------------------

Games and Activities

Repurpose an old toy
(or purchase one at your local thrift store)

Black inventors and innovators that EVERY child should know...
(in no particular order)

Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, George Crum, Alfred Cralle, John Love, Carter G. Woodson, James West, William Purvis, Valerie Thomas, Kenneth J. Dunkley, Dr. Jane Wright, Sarah Goode, Daniel Hale Williams, Lewis Latimer, Augustus Jackson, Garrett Morgan, Elijah McCoy, Benjamin Banneker, Frederick McKinley Jones, Jan Ernst Matzeliger, Sarah Boone, Granville T. Woods, George Washington Carver, John Stanard

Visit a Museum

or connect with friends and family
to curate your own gallery

with collected...

Artifacts, Books and Stories

to honor

the many selfless contributions
that have made our lives better

"Thank you"

Food and Beverage

and since a love of food is universal
any Black History celebration

must...
must...
MUST...

include

learning about the
considerable
contributions

made by African Americans
(to not only what we eat)

but to also how we grow, flavor, prepare and preserve it

So allow the gratitude and grace of Black History Month
to permeate all year long, as you remember to say...

"Thank you!"

"Thank you, Thank you, Thank you"
