Today I Held A Baby... (Not Your Typical College Lesson)

Today I held a baby...

sweet
small
precious

the newest member of our family

and as I noticed him

his status
his stature
his frame

I silently noted to myself...

This is love

May 18, 2015

And it had been on another day

(just like this one)

when I had pulled into the parking lot of a college campus
only to realize that I had no idea where I was going

But rather than humble myself to ask for help, I tried to avoid appearing too

vulnerable
desperate
lost and confused

(which ironically enough, is all the things that I was)

But there is just something about Him...

and the way that He

helps
holds
handles

us

even when we are

too small
too scared
too stubborn

to just stop and ask for help...

He sends it anyway

a familiar face appearing in the crowd to lead the way to our destination

(which would never have been found, being on the wrong side of campus and all)

And today as I held a baby...

sweet
small
precious

the newest member of our family

I remembered that to Him, I'm also family...

sweet
small
precious

and He carefully notices

my status
my stature
my frame

because

this is love...

He is love

and so today as I held and noticed a baby
I thanked God for the many ways

He continues to hold
and notice

me

Grow Together

In 2014, I said... "I don't want anything for Mother's Day"
In 2015, I said... "I don't need anything for Mother's Day"

This year, I said..."Let's take family photos for Mother's Day"

and as I look over them
(the photographs)

and how much they have grown over the years
(the children)

I couldn't help but wonder
about how God looks at us as His children

noticing...
remembering...
knowing...

as He continues to

love
guide

and watch as we
grow together

What I Miss This Mother's Day

It's a Mother's Day Weekend...

(this time with)

no chubby hands to hold
no fat cheeks to kiss
no baby fat to squeeze

because instead when you hugged me this morning

I felt muscle
rock solid abs
a strong man

and you smiled as

you bent down to kiss me
arms reaching down to hold me

not realizing that although

I love the Godly man that you are becoming,
I will forever miss the little boy you once were

A Lesson From the Un-named People in the Bible

We've...

read about them
heard their stories

but do not even know their names

the woman with the Alabaster box
the widow of Nain
the woman with the issue of blood

and entire sermons have been built around them

their lives
their stories

the woman with the Alabaster box
(defined by what she gave)

the widow of Nain
(defined by what she lost)

the woman with the issue of blood
(defined by her problem)

and there were some men too...

the Good Samaritan
(defined by what he did)

the man with palsy
(defined by what he did not do)

the man by the pool at Bethesda
(defined by what he could not do)

and the messages in their stories are real

important
relevant

and as I read them
it becomes even clearer

that...

WHAT you are is very different from WHO you are

(because none of us want to be defined only by our "what",
we really just want people to see our "who")

but the truth is...

to us, they both matter

But ever notice how it seems Jesus never looked at people's "what"?

the woman at the well
(defined by her placement)

the woman caught in adultery
(defined by her act)

the Shunammite woman
(defined by her heritage)

and perhaps He wanted us to learn

that when...
"what" you are distracts from "who" you are

and when...
"who" you are is not sufficiently conveyed by "what" you are

that's when we will finally learn that

it's really all about who He is

Holy
Sovereign
God
King of Kings
Redeemer
Healer
Savior
Friend

and so what you call me

how you

view
define

my what and
my who

does not even matter when
He simply calls me...

His
